when you really think about it, doesn’t it seem like hot air balloons should pretty much always explode? i mean, i know they do sometimes, but if you’ve ever seen them being inflated… i really think they should basically always fail. i get the physics behind why they work and all that, but you just can’t change the fact that it’s a few hundred pounds of fabric attached to the biggest flamethrower this side of a zombie movie, and the guys at the controls always seem to be named Biff or Trent or “Ol’ No-Eyebrows” or something.
i dunno. alls i know is that we saw some and i tooks some purty pitchers of em….
if you want the full story, head on over to brandon’s post (which has an even cleverer balloon-related title than mine). I’m just here to fill in the gaps.
but for those who can’t handle brandon’s awesome prose, here’s the cliff notes summary: JBR (joan, brandon, and riley) came into town along with Granny Lynn. we went out to the outlet mall and stocked up on assorted kid-related things, and then came back in time for the great hot-air-balloon-take-off-and-parachuter-spectacular… which didn’t happen due to the stupefying amount of rain and lightning cavorting in the air above baton rouge.
so we went to nagoya to wait out mother nature, where riley either raised the roof or practiced feyly shrugging his shoulders:

attempted pacifier theft:

and did … whatever this is:

caroline tolerated a hug:

put up with some uncouth behavior:

and got a sweet, if obfuscated kiss:

anyway, after all this business, we finally went to pennington for the nighttime lighting of the balloons. at first, caroline just watched from her stroller/throne:

and brandon and riley played with the balloon balloons:

eventually they started the actual balloon-lighting. joan and i both ran around, trying to fit the event into a still frame, and i did get a couple of decent shots:

but i eventually gave up trying to get a still photo that really captured what was going on. fortunately the d90 has video capabilities that, while not great, are nice to have in a pinch:
by this point it was waaaaay past caroline’s bedtime. they played in the highlander’s trunk for a bit while we got ready to head out:

i’m trying to keep these posts down to one or two major events or themes per post, so i think i’ll go ahead and sign off here. i assure you, it has nothing to do with the fact that my week was otherwise dreadfully boring, if terribly productive. no no, not at all.
